Brophy Senior Matthew Burleson, wins H&R Block scholarship
Matthew Burleson, a senior at Brophy College Preparatory and Scottsdale resident, has been awarded a $20,000 college scholarship in the H&R Block Budget Challenge.
Brophy Consumer Finance students participated in the challenge which invites students to play the role of a newly-employed college graduate who must learn how to establish a budget, pay student loans and other bills, and generally figure out how to successfully navigate their personal finances. Almost 155,000 students competed nationally for 132 scholarships.
Burleson commented, “I enjoyed this experience because it challenged me and allowed me to put the skills that I had learned to the test. It also brought out some of my competitive side. This class is unique because I learned financial skills that I will actually need to know and use later in life.”
Burleson will attend Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University and study finance. He also has been selected to the W. P. Carey Leaders Academy, an honor reserved for the top 15-20 percent of students at ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business.
